Abstract
Questions of credibility and authenticity haunt contemporary research works
investigating the phenomenon of trauma in war fiction. In an age marked by mass death
and mass confusion, it is difficult to place the literature of struggle within the confines of
unequivocal discourses, since the great disillusionment of the postwar eras questions the
state of language and meaning in a world gone wrong. As such, the legitimacy of artistic
language has become debatable, calling for new modes of speakability that may
communicate the ineffable.
This thesis interrogates the state of this aesthetic expression in three war stories
by veteran authors, dealing with three major conflicts in American history. The three
novels uncover the intricacies involved in representing the wound and the difficult task
of bearing witness to extraordinary human events using ordinary language. Norman
Mailer’s The Naked and The Dead, Tim O’Brien’s The Things They Carried, and Kevin
Powers’ The Yellow Birds move between an unquenchable desire to turn pain into
coherent and restorative stories and an overwhelming awareness of the limitations
imposed by language.
However, the thesis argues, this linguistic paucity authorizes limitless venues for
interpreting the wound, on the one hand, and relieves the text from the burden of absolute
signification, on the other. Thus, within the confines imposed by the subject matter, the
novels usher readers into unlimited possibilities, allowing them to reconstruct meaning
out of the shattering remnants of language. By examining issues related to narrative
experience, memory, structure, temporality, and testimony both in terms of form and
content, the thesis reveals the extent to which the experience of trauma infects artistic
expression. Finally, it contends that the best way to understand narratives of pain is to
V
accept their adherence to the duplicity of meaning torn between truth and falsehood,
speech and silence as well as deceit and sincerity.
