Abstract
Algerian universities are progressively embracing distance education as a
gradually recognized pedagogical model within the framework of the higher
education system. This shift has been driven by the persisting peril of COVID-
19, compelling the adoption of this novel non-face-to-face instructional
approach. While serving as a contingency strategy to ensure the continuity of
educational processes during times of crises, it simultaneously exposes a
plethora of challenges, shortcomings, and impediments that hinder the efficacy
of distance education within Algerian academia.
The purpose of this study is to elucidate the current state of distance education
in Algerian universities, meticulously delineating its mechanisms and
accentuating the fundamental prerequisites upon which it is built. Additionally,
it endeavors to explicate the primary electronic evaluation methodologies
employed to activate this pioneering educational paradigm, thereby facilitating
the sector's transition from a quantitative to a qualitative educational milieu.
This incipient experience has unearthed a multitude of obstacles, encompassing
the notable deficiency in digital infrastructure, the lack of preparedness among
faculty members and students to embrace the tenets of distance education, and
the dearth of legal and regulatory frameworks governing the systematic
implementation of remote teaching and learning endeavors within the Algerian
university context.
