Abstract

This course offers an in-depth exploration of the dynamic and evolving relationship between international law (IL) and international relations (IR). It seeks to provide students with a foundational understanding of both disciplines, analyzing how they intersect, diverge, and influence one another i n the contemporary global system. Through a multidisciplinary approach, the course addresses key theoretical debates, legal principles, and political realities that shape the international order. It begins with an introduction to the core concepts and historical evolution of international law and international relations, progressing to examine the role of the state as a central actor, the reasons states commit to international agreements, and the influence of legal norms on global behavior. Special focus is placed on contemporary issues such as humanitarian intervention, the responsibility to protect (R2P), and the legal framework guiding the use of force in international affairs. The course further explores the application of international humanitarian law (IHL), its scope, limitations, and the challenges it faces in modern conflicts.
