The desert cities of Middle Maghreb are considered among the most important cities that played an important and effective function in the history of Middle Maghreb due to the civilizational role they fulfilled. Several factors contributed to this, including their strategic geographical location and their far distance from the centers of government, which made them a destination for many human races that settled there through different stages. Those incomers were essentially refugees searching for security and settlement, and then they formed a human mosaic that gave a new revival to those parts. Due to its distinctive location, the desert cities witnessed a diversified and integrated economic activity that combined many activities. The agricultural activity was the most important and the one these cities were famous for. They were known by farming and the abundance and diversity of their agricultural products, especially dates, citrus fruits, and olives. In addition, the significant presence of the industrial and craft activity cannot be denied. Many industries were known there, including textile industries, pottery and iron industries. Moreover, and since the desert cities had a network of roads that linked them to various regions, the commercial activity had the greatest part of its economic activity, as it was linked to commercial relations with the cities of the hill and neighboring countries, especially the countries of Western Sudan, with which it was associated with commercial relations that lasted for a long period of time. In favour of these relations, the desert cities controlled the caravans crossed the desert and the most important commodities of that period (gold and slaves). Its prosperous economy was reflected in other fields, including the scientific side, as it witnessed a thriving scientific activity that was a destination for students of science from different parts of the world to take knowledge and learn from its sheikhs. Because the economy of the desert cities of the Middle Maghreb was based on commercial activity, the inhabitants of the cities transferred besides their commodities, their thoughts, their civilization, and their beliefs to the other side (western Sudan). This qualified them to play the role of the teacher, and then the educating sheikh, and to influence the country of Sudan in various aspects and fields. Their civilizational impact was strong and prominent because they modified the reality of those regions and changed the fabric of their systems through the treatment that is based on the message, with advice and guidance. Keywords: Desert cities, Middle Maghreb, the civilizational role, the economic activity, the effect and affectedness
