Abstract

The current study is concerned with the extent whether the perceived physician empathy contributes to improving health outcomes (quality of life, therapeutic compliance) through the moderating role of type of consultation and mediating mechanism of cancer-related emotional distress.
The two study models were developed based on a biopsychosocial approach and previous studies.
In a cross sectional study design, 69 lung cancer patients attend Franz Fanon Hospital in Blida - Algeria completed validated tools where the consultation and relational empathy (care) measure was used. The type of consultation was determined at the end of the consultation. The EORTC QLQ-C30 Summary Score was also used to assess the quality of life .A therapeutic compliance measure of lung cancer patients was designed by a research student The Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-General (FACT-G) was also used to evaluate cancer-related emotional distress using the emotional dimension of the 6-item subscale.
The hypothesized models were tested the effect of perceived physician empathy in lung cancer patients on health outcomes (quality of life and treatment compliance) through cancer-related emotional distress, and whether these associations are moderated by type of consultation.
Based on the results, the study results indicated that an increase in perceived physician empathy was associated with improvements in quality of life and therapeutic compliance, but cancer-related emotional distress did not mediate this relationships. Lastly, no significant effect was found between perceived physician empathy on health outcomes (quality of life, therapeutic compliance), through cancer-related emotional distress, at different levels of type of consultation.
