Abstract
This study aims to examine the relationship between infant mortality and fertility rates, by analyzing household behavior in light of changes related to child survival. The study is based on the basic hypothesis that a high infant mortality rate leads to an increase in fertility rates, as a result of compensatory behavior adopted by households to ensure the continuation of offspring, or to reach the desired number of children . We relied on a descriptive and analytical approach, using data from the sixth Algerian Cluster Survey conducted in 2019. The study analyzed differences in the length of the interval between births, the average number of children born according to the duration of marriage, the likelihood of family expansion, and the use of contraception, given the presence or absence of infant mortality . The results showed that the effect of infant mortality on fertility is positive. This means that the higher a woman's infant mortality rate, the greater her fertility and desire to compensate for the lost offspring. This effect disappears once a woman reaches her desired number of children. This is demonstrated by the indicators used in the study, as the interval between births decreases as infant mortality is recorded, reflecting mothers' desire to compensate. The percentage of women using contraception is also very low when infant deaths are recorded, further demonstrating women's desire to compensate. We also found that the average number of children born per woman increases with the increase in infant deaths. Meanwhile, the likelihood of families expanding is greater when infant deaths are recorded than when they are not . Keywords: Fertility, Infant Mortality, Contraception, Interbirth Interval
