Abstract
The novel entitled "The Ego and the Other in the Algerian Novel, The
Mohamed Dib Trilogy" is studied in this paper. Through this study, we are
trying to explore the problem of the "ego" and the "other" and their
conventional boundaries and the relationship that binds them in various
fields of knowledge (philosophy, psychology, comparative image science,
and sociology). The ego (the Algerian) and the other (the colonialist) are
presented according to the relationships that bind the personalities in a
specific temporal and spatial framework (The Big House, The Fire, The
Loom)‚ translated by sami Al Droubi.
It is a novel in which the author monitors a tense and tense historical and
cultural reality between two opposing ideologies and the impact of the
other on the borders of the ego (Algerian), which is now fluctuating
between adherence to belonging and identification with the other. The
author equally describes how the colonizer distorted perceptions and the
stereotypical clichés. These acts were depicted in his colonial discourse in
his drawing of the Arab self through a strategy through which he aims to
impose his authority and justify and legitimize the colonial act. Therefore,
investigating the problem of otherness requires linking it to the ego and the
historical, social, cultural, geographical, and political context that brought
them together. As an Algerian writer, Mohamed Dib was familiar with
Western culture and French society when writing his trilogy. In this
manner, he presented several issues that transcend the boundaries of the
ego and the other, related to identity, belonging, fragmentation, and
conflict. He concluded with a cultural narrative of resistance aiming to
respond to the colonizer with counter-writing that hears the voice of the
marginalized ego and redraws the boundaries of the relationship that linked
the colonizer to the colonized with the eyes of the Algerian self.
