Abstract
this research seeks to study one of the most important pragmatics studies which is
the conversational implicature theory that came to light with one of the oxford’s
philosopher who is named: (Paul Grice) this philosopher wanted to show that the
speaker’s meanings are not always these simply meanings which we understand when
we hear it. So our words may convey what we actually mean, maybe different things, or
maybe only some of the meanings. this problem that prompted Grice to talk about what
is known as the explicit and the implicit meaning of utterances in our daily
conversation. So he indicated that the speakers in their daily conversations postulate
some Maxims in their conversation which are present in the mind of both the speaker
and the listener; this is what lead to the emergence of the notion of Cooperative
Principles and its Conversational Maxims: Maxim of Quantity, Maxim of Quality,
Maxim of Relation, Maxim of Manner. and some of violating of these maxims leads to
what he termed as the Conversational implicature.
perhaps these daily conversational maxims and some of the daily conversations
violating didn’t lost from the minds of heritage scientists who wanted to study the
Quranic Text and worked towards making it easy to understand it; especially to non –
Arabs who converted to Islam and found the Arabic language difficult to understand.
This is the reason why a lot of heritage sciences emerged working on studying the
language from all of their sides such as: the phonetic, the morphologic, the syntax, the
rhetoric… etc on the other hand the science of jurisprudence came about, where the
scholars of jurisprudence fundamentals have worked on identifying and teaching the
people about the orders and forbiddances through these Quranic texts; what we have to
do; what we must avoid…etc the learners of these Quranic texts had talked about many
things that appear to be similar to the pragmatics thinking especially the conversational
implicature.
This issue and our study in the field of both the pragmatics and the heritage
languages thoughts and because of the importance of these thoughts and theories –non
Arabs studies and heritages Arabic language studies- prompted us to write a research
studying the important countenance pragmatics especially the gricean in the Arabic
heritage language thoughts. So we search about these thoughts in the fifth century texts
by taking some books as a sample like: (Dalail El Iejaz) by Eljorjani in the rhetoric
side, (El Omda) by El kayrawani in the criticism side; and (El Moetamad Fi Osoul
El Fikh) by Elbasri in the fundamentalist side.
our work has focused on studying the thoughts of six authors from the fifth
heritage century, we have relied on different methods to continue it such as the
descriptive analytical method, the comparative, and the historical method. These
methods helped us for continuing our study which began by searching in the ancient
thoughts and describing and analyzing them, then comparing them to the gricean
pragmatic thoughts. So we categorize our work for three chapters. in the first chapter we
discuss about the pragmatics and gricean thought, then we talk in the second chapter
about the gricean thinking in the rhetorical and criticism thought, and the third chapter
we mention about the fundamentalist thoughts which include some gricean thoughts. so
we found many texts that agree with the gricean thoughts of the conversational maxims,
and some violating of these maxims, this why we think that the ancient texts include
many thoughts that seem similar to the new non-Arab language studies which we
shouldn’t forget in our studies.
