Abstract

Al-Andalus experienced an outstanding intellectual prosperity and a distinctive cultural dynamism that was closely linked to the doctrinal plurality characterizing its society-both within the Islamic domain and among the adherents of the three monotheistic faiths. Such diversity provided a fertile ground for the emergence of an active dialectical tradition, rooted in the interplay of ideas and divergences of perspectives. Debates in this context were marked by a rigorous dialectical methodology, relying on precision in in argumentation and the deployment of evidence and proofs derived from the science of usül and its methodological instruments. This phenomenon was not confined to mere intellectual disputation; rather, it laid the foundations for a genuine civilizational dialogue among followers of different sects and religions. Beyond its methodological evolution within Islamic thought, it transcended geographical boundaries and became particularly manifest by the end of the middle Ages in Christian and Jewish intellectual circles in Europe. Thinkers of both traditions adopted these methods-especially in relation to argumentative strategies informed by Islamic kalām and philosophy-in their attempts to reconstruct their identities on rational grounds more capable of addressing contemporary challenges within mature intellectual frameworks. This underlines that dialectical debate in Al-Andalus constituted a vital epistemic resource which significantly contributed to preparing the ground for the European Renaissance.
