Abstract

This study, titled “The Semiotics of the Passions in Al Maqamat of Alhamadani,” aims to deceive the traditional text of "Al Maqamah"and subject it to a modern critical approach: “The Semiotics of Passions.” Our choice was with the intention of highlighting the hidden gems of this rich text. Therefore we tried to expand the narrative approach and interrogate the meaning emanating from the passions’ dimension that formed the text of "Al Maqamah" in the fourth century AH. Our research is divided into an introduction and three chapters. In the introduction, we traced the historical transformations that semiotics underwent in its transmission, from the semiotics of actions to the semiotics of passions. The first chapter was devoted to establishing the stable semiotic base that controls the direction of the narrative and the generative trajectory of meaning. We also detailed its limits and basic principles in the semiotics of passions and the inclusion of the verbal dimension, which requires the use of the tense space and its syntactic modifications. The second chapter included several sections that dealt with the narrative in "Al Maqamah" text and the impact of the event on the formation of the narrative character and the reference to its identity, the narrative division of Al Maqamah text, the narrative program, and the semiotic square. As for the third chapter, we subjected Al Maqamat to an analysis from the passions' perspective that covered the lexical nomenclature that is related to it, as well as the structural forms and narrative paths of identity and self, leading to the manifestation of both the “passion of travel” and the “passion of deception.” Along with a representation of the passions that branched out from them. 290 The conclusion includes the results reached in our research. Thanks to this allocation, we were able to emphasize the psychological factor exploited by the passionate self in "Al Maqamah" in order to achieve its programs that produce a parallel discourse originating from the self. And while "Al Maqamah" demonstrates strength of style and eloquence, it also reveals conflicting psychological, social, and political aspects. We have tried to link an ancient Arab nomenclature heritage with applied mechanisms that resulted in a density of passions parallel to the narrative and stylistic density that characterized the text of "Al Maqamah".
